Love, Dad

Feinkošt 2022

original title: Milý tati

directed by: Diana Cam Van Nguyen

year: 2021

duration: 13 minutes

country: Czechia, Slovakia

Writing letters as therapy and trying to cope with the feeling of being misunderstood and abandoned is the central motive of the autobiographical film. The adult Diana goes through the letters her father wrote to her from prison when she was a child. The warmth and affectionate nature of her father's words contrast with his actions upon his return home, which the author now seeks to understand, as well as to reconnect with her estranged parent. An unusual technique combining live-action film with rotoscoping, 2D and cut-out animation creates an aesthetic space for an authentic confession in which the fundamental question resonates: would everything have been okay if I had been born a boy?

The film won the 2021 Magnesia Award, the 2021 Czech Lion Award for Best Short Film, the 2021 Czech Film Critics Award for Best Short Film, the Best Student Short Film Award at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival 2021, the Best Documentary Directing Award at FAMUfest 2022 and the Best Sound Award at the Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival 2022.
