RISING ABOVE (dir. Natálie Durchánková, Czech Republic, 2023, 4 minutes)
Streets, trees, lamps. A blow, the dull snap of a broken rib, an explosion of pain. Extremely suggestive but subtly animated, the film shows the experience of a drastic rape from the victim's point of view. Just when you want to look away in despair, the narrative turns around and shows above all the incredible strength behind overcoming such trauma. Natálie Durchánková's empowering film was nominated for a Student Oscar.
NEJRAJSÍ KÚT V SÍROM SVETE (r. Robert Mihály, Slovakia, 2022, 25 minutes)
What is fascism? A fictional TV reporter, originally from Ukraine, visits various events, actors and public protests in an attempt to understand the Slovak socio-political reality. She encounters the inability to reflect on her own language and history and captures the heated social mood leading to the emergence of a new authoritarianism. The documentary essay holds up a mirror not only to contemporary Slovakia, but also to neighbouring countries that may soon suffer a similar fate.
SALMON (dir. Mattis Heurlin, Denmark, 2023, 23 minutes)
In a Nordic Michelin restaurant, they strive for absolute perfection every day. But perfection has never been more essential than right now at table seventeen. One mistake and everything can come crashing down. A young chef who just got the opportunity he's been waiting for. This heated salmon drama reveals not only the workings of top restaurants, but also the most common human failings. Because often the biggest mistake is not the mistake itself, but the desperate attempt to cover it up.
TEXT ME WHEN YOU GET HOME XX (dir. Niklas Bauer, Germany, 2022, 11 minutes)
A young woman in the middle of the night on her way home in a taxi. An innocent conversation quickly turns to more intimate topics and the atmosphere gradually thickens. A few deft shortcuts and the car soon curls up on a remote road somewhere on the periphery. What is intention and what is coincidence? Write When You Get Home is one contribution to the endless but still very topical debate about sexualised violence.
NICHT DIE 80ER (dir. Marleen Valien, Germany, 2022, 17 minutes)
Two people, one restaurant, a few prejudices, some fish and a lot of mistakes. The nervousness of a first date is quickly dispelled by a spontaneous kiss. But an unexpected confession follows. A young girl must quickly decide how to react to the situation. Meanwhile, a waiter asks for a Yelp review. The situation is becoming intensely uncomfortable for everyone. The latest film from successful young director Marleen Valien bravely builds the awkwardness to the limit while presenting important themes. Above all, it makes us think: how would we react in such a moment?
